Co-founded by Emer O Boyle and Full Professor of Astronomy Lorraine Hanlon,
UCD Parity Studios is the university wide artists in residence programme at University College Dublin. With the support of UCD College of Science O Boyle's role was established to lead the development of the residency programme across the university and to ensure its reach beyond it, through strategic partnerships with local authorities and organisations across the visual arts sector.
Before its official launch in 2012, there was no formal mechanism in Ireland to facilitate exchanges between visual artists, academics and researchers. The year long residencies were set up to support these exchanges by providing professional artists with funding studio space, access to lectures, libraries and other campus facilities, to explore current and prospective research through the lens of artistic practice and to develop their work within the university context. This significant initiative in Ireland's cultural landscape, in turn, contributes to the university's objective, to build engagement locally, nationally and internationally, through exhibitions, talks and performances.
Parity Studios is now the leading provider of funded residencies for artists in Ireland. Since it's launch in 2012 it has supported 28 artists to situate their practice in the university and to develop their work through exchanges with researchers and academics in UCD Colleges of Science, Social Sciences and Law, Arts and Humanities, Agriculture and Health Sciences, Business, Engineering and Architecture.
